Category-based Express Entry Draws

Canada has introduced category-based draws as part of the Express Entry system to help meet specific labor market needs and support economic goals. These draws target candidates based on particular attributes, such as work experience in specific occupations, language proficiency, or other factors rather than just overall Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores.

Key Details About Category-Based Draws

Categories: The categories for the draws are chosen based on labor market needs. As of 2024, below categories include:

  • Healthcare occupations.

  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) professions.

  • Trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.

  • French-language proficiency.

  • Transport and agriculture.

Eligibility

Candidates must meet specific criteria to be eligible for a category-based draw. For example, a healthcare worker must have experience in a healthcare-related occupation, while a candidate selected for French proficiency must demonstrate strong French language skills.

Draw Process

These draws operate similarly to regular Express Entry draws, but candidates selected meet the criteria of the targeted category. Once selected, candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.

Purpose

The aim is to address the shortage of skills in key areas by allowing Canada to attract immigrants who are best suited to fill gaps in the labor market.
